“Mindset is the key.”

Why building an engineering culture is important? Link to heading

Engineering culture refers to the attitudes and behaviors of the engineers in their daily work. It should impact the way they act, communicate, and make decisions. A healthy engineering culture forms a good engineering team, which can make a significant contribution to the company’s success.

Mindset is the key Link to heading

There are many things to consider when discussing engineering culture. In this article, I list some of the most important things that have made me feel good when working with different engineering teams during my past careers. These points may or may not resonate with everyone, but there is no one right way to perform management tasks.

Building a healthy engineering culture should start as soon as possible. To do so, create a checklist for yourself before starting. If you don’t have anything in mind, just Google it and select the ones that sound good to you. From that list, you can start hiring the right people or guiding your existing teams toward those points. Be patient, building mindset is more difficult than skillset because it takes time to absorb.

These are some points to consider when building a healthy engineering culture:

$ Open Link to heading

Being open to discussion, feedback, and identifying issues is crucial in building a healthy engineering culture. Effective communication is the key to success when working in a team environment. It helps to build things faster and create strong relationships between team members and other stakeholders. Sometimes, the solution to an issue may simply arise when someone speaks up, so creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts is essential.

$ High level of ownership Link to heading

“It’s not my job” shouldn’t be the first response when an engineer is asked to do something. A good engineer is someone whom the team can rely on to resolve technical issues and take ownership of their work. It’s important to support your team members, because in the future, they will support you too. Being passionate about your work is crucial, as it reflects who you are as a person and can inspire others in the team.

$ Dare to try Link to heading

When it comes to daring to try, remember that even if something is well-done, it could always be done better. Software engineering is a dynamic field that is constantly changing, and being afraid to try new things can limit your knowledge and cause you to miss out on opportunities to improve your products and yourself. Don’t be afraid to take risks and try new approaches. Remember: you’ll never know what you’re capable of until you try it. No pain, no gain!

$ Quality over Quantity Link to heading

The output of an engineer should be production-ready, not just functionally complete. Don’t try to do too many things at the same time. Instead, be focused and deliver a few great things that are of high quality. Your code reflects who you are, so take pride in producing clean, efficient, and effective code. Remember, it’s better to have a few excellent features than many mediocre ones.

Conclusion Link to heading

There is no recipe for success, but I believe that if you can build a team with at least the above mindsets, you will not be far from success

Keep calm and good things will come!
